It is a great honor to serve as the Chairperson of the 15th International Kawasaki Disease Symposium (IKDS).The first meeting, titled “The First US-Japan Workshop on Kawasaki Disease,” was held in Hawaii in 1984 under the chairmanship of Dr. Melish. Since then, the symposium has been held every two to three years. As the 13th IKDS in 2021 was held entirely online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this will be the first in-person gathering in Japan in nine years, following the 12th IKDS in Yokohama in 2018.
There has been a lot of progress in KD research, due to changes in infectious disease trends influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and scientific advancements such as AI. While the ability to connect instantly with the world online is wonderful, the experience gained through face-to-face discussion is, above all, invaluable and essential. I hope that gathering here in Japan—the country with the highest number of KD patients in the world—for the IKDS will serve to connect everyone involved in this field across the globe.
I gave my first presentation at the 4th IKDS in Maui, Hawaii, in 1991. Since then, I have attended every symposium. These experiences have not only stimulated my research motivation through learning new findings but have also allowed me to make many friends and enjoy wonderful times together.
Our venue, Makuhari Messe in Chiba, is conveniently located, approximately 40 minutes by limousine bus from both Narita and Haneda Airports, and about 30 minutes by train from Tokyo Station.

第15回国際川崎病シンポジウム（IKDS）の会長を仰せつかり大変光栄に存じます。
1984年に開催された第1回は”The First US-Japan Workshop on Kawasaki Disease”として1984年にMelish先生会長のもとハワイで開催されました。以後2～3年おきに開催されています。日本での開催は7回目です。第13回は完全ウエブ開催だったので、2018年の横浜での第12回以来9年ぶりの日本での現地開催です。
新型コロナパンデミックの影響による感染症動向変化やAIなどの科学的進歩により、川崎病の研究も大きくかわってきました。Webで世界中と瞬時に繋がれることは素晴らしいですが、やはり対面でディスカッションすることによって得られる経験はなによりも貴重で重要です。世界でもっとも川崎病患者の多い日本での開催で現地に集まることが世界中で川崎病に関わる人々をつなぐことになると期待します。私自身は1991年マウイ島での第4回IKDSで初めて演題発表をして、以後すべてのIKDSに参加しました。新知見を学んで研究意欲が刺激されるだけでなく、友人も増えて楽しい時間を過ごしてきました。
今回の会場の千葉市にある幕張メッセは成田空港や羽田空港からリムジンバスで40分、東京駅から電車で約30分ととてもアクセスのよい場所にあります。IKDS終了後には観光をお楽しみいただければ幸いです。

It is a profound honor to welcome you all to Chiba, Japan, for the 15th International Kawasaki Disease Symposium. This year holds a special significance as it marks the 60th anniversary of the first report on Kawasaki Disease by Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki. Hosting this milestone event in Chiba—the very place where Dr. Kawasaki pursued his medical studies—adds a deeply personal and historical resonance to our gathering.
Over the past six decades, our collective understanding of Kawasaki Disease has expanded immensely, leading to remarkable advancements in treatment. However, significant challenges remain. Unraveling the etiology of the disease and achieving the complete prevention of coronary artery sequelae continue to be our most pressing goals. Furthermore, we must address the diverse challenges that vary across different regions of the world.
During these four days, I hope you will engage in fruitful discussions and share groundbreaking achievements across various fields to solve these enduring mysteries. Beyond the scientific sessions, we are planning social events including a Welcome Reception and a Gala Dinner. I encourage you all to take these opportunities to strengthen the bonds of friendship with colleagues from around the globe, united by our shared dedication to this field.
In East Asian tradition, the 60th year represents "Kanreki"—a momentous cycle's completion and a time of rebirth. As we look forward to the next 60 years, it is my sincere hope that this symposium serves as a platform to pass our passion and knowledge to the next generation of young researchers, transcending national borders.
We look forward to seeing many of you in Chiba for this historic occasion.

川崎病が初めて報告されて60年となる年に、川崎先生が医学を修められたこの千葉県で第15回川崎病国際シンポジウムを開催し、皆様をお迎えすることを大変光栄に存じます。
この60年間に川崎病については様々なことが明らかにされ、治療法も格段に進歩いたしました。しかし、病因の解明と冠動脈後遺症の完全な抑制は最大の課題として残されており、また地域ごとに異なる課題もあります。
これらの課題解決にむけた様々な分野での成果を発表し、議論し合う充実した4日間をお過ごしいただきたいと存じます。また会期中、Welcome receptionやGala dinner等を予定しておりますので、川崎病という一つのキーワードで世界から集った者同士の親睦を深めていただきたいと考えております。
東洋の伝統では60年は還暦、再出発の節目の年となります。次の60年を見据え、次世代の若き研究者に国境を越えて情熱を継承する場となりますことを願っております。
